What is PSBR’S Breed Standards?
The breed standard establishes the physical criteria and requirements that pigs must meet to be registered or recognized as purebred representatives of four specific swine breeds (Landrace, Large White, Duroc, and Pietrain).
Landrace
- White and no other color or marking
- Ears dropping and slanting forward
- Long, clean face and neck
- Big, even toes
- Wide based from front to rear
- Long, lean, well-shaped top
- Seven functional teats on each side that are well spaced and prominent
- Healthy, and with no physical abnormalities present


Yorkshire/Large White
- White and no other color or marking
- Upright ears
- Long, clean face and neck
- Big, even toes
- Wide based from front to rear
- Long, lean, well-shaped top
- Seven functional teats on each side that are well spaced and prominent
- Good hip structure with long, developed muscle
- Healthy, and with no physical abnormalities present
Duroc
- Must be red in color and no other markings.
- Ears must be down, drooping ears
- Long, clean face and neck
- Big, even toes
- Wide based from front to rear
- Square, expressively muscled top
- Seven prominent, functional teats on each side that are well spaced
- Long, deep muscular through all portions of the ham
- Healthy, and with no physical abnormalities present


Pietrain
- Normally white with black patches.
- Tip of the ears towards the front and slightly towards the outside.
- Short and broad in relation to the length.
- Rump is broad, well-muscled and slopes as the rump of a horse with a slight hollow in the shape of a plate just above the tail, which is attached fairly low.
- Hams are well rounded, broad, well filled and descend near to the knuckle joints.
- Legs are straight and strong.
- Healthy, and with no physical abnormalities present
