What is the Swine Breeder Farms Accreditation Program (SBFAP)?

PSBR members are accredited farms that have been approved through the Swine Breeders’ Accreditation Program (SBFAP) and are members of the Accredited Swine Breeder Association of the Philippines (ASBAP).

The Swine Breeder Farms Accreditation Program (SBFAP) implemented by the Bureau of Animal Industry (BAI) under the Department of Agriculture of the Philippines.

The program is governed by Administrative Order No. 23, Series of 2005, which provides revised guidelines for accrediting swine breeder farms.

Objectives

  1. To identify, accredit and promote swine farms with genetically improved quality breeders.
  2. To sustain the advanced status of the swine industry by ensuring availability and wide distribution of good quality breeder stocks even among small-hold farmers.

Criteria for Accreditation

The swine breeder farm must:

  • Be a registered business entity with a permit to operate.
  • Have facilities for testing and identification of genetically superior breeds such as:
    • testing pens (minimum of 25 head testing facilities)
    • backfat tester or lean meter.
  • Have records of lineage of the animals (lines / strains used), pedigree records, average daily gain, and feed conversion ratio.
  • Sustain appropriate program for Hog Cholera and should issue certificates of vaccination when necessary.
  • Have a full-time animal husbandryman / veterinarian.
  • Be certified as Brucellosis, PRRS and Pseudorabies free.

Procedures for Accreditation

  1. Submit duly accomplished application form and other documents necessary to the Secretariat.
  2. Pre-evaluation of application by the Secretariat.
  3. Farm visit and evaluation by the inspection team of the Technical Working Committee (TWC).
  4. Recommendation for accreditation forwarded by the TWC to BAI Director.
  5. Final approval of the accreditation papers by the Director of the Bureau of Animal Industry.
